I’ve been reading through some posts here and posts on external blogs to try to get an up-to-date perspective on the first steps to take to get some search engine traffic.

With all the recent changes it’s not easy to know what methods are still viable, but this is what I’ve come up with as my starter.

Core process
1. Build your main site with quality original content and good onpage SEO
2. Build web 2.0 sites, eg, Squidoo, Hub Pages
3. Write and submit unique articles to select directories, eg, Ezine
4. Link to main site from web 2.0 sites and articles
5. Build links to web 2.0 sites and articles through social bookmarking, forum posting
6. Create video content and post to YouTube
7. Build links to YouTube content

Core principles

Vary anchor text
Spread the links over a wide range of sources, but keep them to related contexts
Do not post duplicate content – rewrite or spin intelligently
Add links slowly and steadily
Avoid any linkbuilding tool or system such as UAW, BMR, SENuke
Make the web 2.o sites more than a single page

I’ve also read good things about Pinterest, Twitter, Google+ and Facebook Likes- but I’m not up to speed with those yet.
